Classic Metal Roofing Systems’ president Todd Miller recently had the opportunity to visit the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety Research Center (IBHS) in Richburg, South Carolina. He was there as part of a visit scheduled by members of the Metal Construction Association (MCA). MCA is the leading trade association promoting metal as part of the building envelope. Miller currently chairs the organization.

Miller and others visited the three-year-old $40 million facility to learn more about the advanced testing techniques which have been developed and performed at the center. The purpose is to be able to provide “real world” testing of building materials and how they will perform in wind, hail, rain, and fire events. While there, they learned about the results of past tests performed at the state of the art facility as well as things that are planned for the future.

According to Miller, “Visiting the IBHS Research Center was a real treat. We do so as part of our continuing efforts to provide the construction industry with building materials that offer great levels of protection for homeowners and their properties. In many cases, just by investing a little bit more, property owners can achieve far greater protection from the weather extreme which may be most dangerous in their area.”

An outgrowth of research being done at the facility is the Fortified Buildings program which puts forth suggested standards for enhanced building performance.
